Why Choose Us for Your Steel and Heat Treatments

At Precision Edge, we cater for a range of services and products for your knife needs. This includes a wide variety of knives for a multitude of purposes, a regrinding service, and our steel and heat treatment service.

Steel and Heat Treatment

Knife heat treating is required to bring steel to a hardened state. This process of annealing means the metal can be cut and shaped when softened, and then set when cooled. This part of the process is called normalising, and with Precision Edge, we live up to our name, providing blades with consistent accuracy.

With over thirty years of experience, at Precision Edge, we provide top quality services and products in order to save you money in the long-run and helping you increase productivity. Most team members have been with us since the company’s formation, so you know you are in safe hands with experienced and knowledgeable professionals.

When it comes to our steel and heat treatments, there are many benefits for choosing Precision Edge, including the following points.

High Quality Steel

We are so confident in the quality of our steel, that we guarantee you a long shelf life. As standard practice, we stock D2 HC/HC tool steel, M2 HSS, CS100, and 420/440 stainless steel. We also supply various PM grades for particularly challenging jobs. We can offer advice on which grade of steel is most appropriate for the required design, and the tasks you plan to use it for.

High Quality Processes

Blade heating treatment gives your knives extra strength and robustness, meaning you will save on knife replacements. There are three different processes for knife heat treatment: hardening and tempering, martempering, and austempering. The most popular treatment is hardening and tempering, which heats the blades to an extremely high temperature of around 800-900°C, before they are quenched in oil or water, as a process of cooling. Martempering differs in that it quenches the blades at a higher temperature, using molten salt or hot oil, and is suitable for steel containing certain alloys, or different sizes. Lastly, with austempering, there is another specialised form of quenching at a higher temperature, for use with some high-carbon steels. We maintain in-house QA (Quality Assurance) Control systems in order to inspect the quality of our products and services.

High-Performance Coatings

Included in our heat treatment service is the provision of specialised high-performance coatings. There are three main options, including TiN (Titanium Nitride), TiAIN (Titanium Aluminium Nitride), and Nitron MC. These treatments help increase the life of the blades even further by improving their wear resistance properties. Not only that, but we can also provide you with cryogenic low-temperature treatments in order to stabilise components, using temperatures below −190°C to remove residual stresses and again improve wear resistance, by precipitating micro-fine eta carbides.
