Since the earliest recorded human history, knives and blades have been used to build, to prepare food, and to work and craft materials to create all manner of items including tools, utensils and mechanical devices. The skilful use of a knife was integral to many traditional crafts and trades, such as farming and carpentry.

    Machine Knives

The industrial revolution brought about dramatic changes in the way products were made. Much of the work was now done by machines, which were powered by steam, water, electricity, or sometimes by the operator themselves. But machines were unable to wield knives and blades which had been designed to be used by craftsmen. New blades were needed, which would be an integral part of the process and operate under the new conditions. Thus, machine knives were developed.

Machine knives take many forms, from simple, straight blades, to meticulously crafted complex shapes, depending on their specific application. In almost every case, machine knives are exclusive to the task for which they were designed; very few blades can be switched between different machines. The manufacture of such blades is a highly specialized process, as each must be produced within very tight tolerances. Machine knives must often repeat the same incision hundreds or thousands of times per minute for hours at a time, without breaking, dulling or overheating.

The most basic type of machine knife is a straight blade used for simple incisions, but as manufacturing equipment has become more complex, a vast array of other types of machines knives have been developed, including:

    • Serrated machine knives are like tiny saws ideal for making smooth incisions in coarse materials. They are used extensively in the food industry, for example in bread slicers.
    • Scissor machine knives. Ever tried to make a straight cut in a piece of paper with a dull knife blade? The scissor action allows for precision cutting with minimal wear to the tooling.
    • Perforated machine knives are used with products like kitchen towel, enabling each sheet to be easily torn off by hand.
    • Circular machine knives, folder machine knives, C24 machine knives… Some machine knives don’t look like knives at all. But the goal is always to find the most efficient and cost-effective way to perform a process, to the benefit of all involved.
